Join the Millions Using EMLA® to Ease Injection Pain

You are not alone if you are afraid of needles. Even though the fear of needles is real, the pain doesn't have to be. Emla®  is a topical numbing cream that you can purchase without needing a prescription.

How Does EMLA® work?

Emla®  is a topical anesthetic that is used on the skin. Emla® causes temporary numbness to the area of skin where it is applied. It helps reduce the pain that comes with needle injections and other minor procedures.

What does EMLA® contain?

Emla®  has a mixture of the medical ingredients lidocaine (2.5%) and prilocaine (2.5%). Both these drugs are anesthetics that cause temporary numbness.

Can I use EMLA® on my infant or children?

Emla®  can be used on children and babies, including neonates. However, emla® cannot be used on preterm infants. It is also not recommended  for use during pregnancy.

How long does the numbing last?

For Adults:

  • When using emla® Cream or Patch for needles or minor procedures, you should leave emla® on for at least 1 hour before the procedure.
  • When using emla® Cream for larger areas, you should leave emla® on for at least 2 hours before the procedure.
  • The effects of emla® should last for at least 2 hours.

For Children & Infants:

  • For infants under the age of 3 months, emla® Cream or Patch should be left on for a maximum of one hour.
  • For infants between 3-12 months, emla® Cream or Patch should be left on for one hour and no longer than 4 hours.
  • For children between 1-12 years, emla® Cream or Patch should be left on for one hour and no longer than 5 hours.
